JamesChapple(born1612)washangedatExeterforthemurderofAliceBragg.AnAbstractfromthe Chancery Warrants recorded the following order for the forfeiture of land:“24thMay.IICharlesI.(A.D.1635)......attheAssizeheldatExeteronthe18thMarch8CharlesI(A.D.1632) JamesChapelandThomasWhitmore,husbandmen,bothofColliton,inthecountyofDevon,were convictedofthemurderofAliceBragg,ontheprevious2ndofFebruary,byinflictingamortalwoundinher throat,andthatJohnSampson,ofColliton,gentleman,wasalsoconvictedforhavingaidedandabettedthe saidJamesandThomasbeforethemurder,namelyonthe31stJanuarybeforethesaid2ndofFebruary, andc.Thelandsandc.ofallarethereforeforfeitedandc.ItwasfoundbyInquisitiontakenatExeterthe 15thJanuary10CharlesI(A.D.1635),thatthesaidJohnSampsonwasseizedinhisdemesneasoffeeof andinallthatlatedissolvedChantryofSt.JohntheBaptistinColcombewithintheparishofCollitonandof andinandc.HerefollowsthedescriptionofotherpropertyofthesaidJohnSampson:Knowyethatweby thesepresentsandcdogiveandc,toPeterNewton,JohnChaseofMembury,HenryGodsallofTaunton, merchant,PhilipLissantofTaunton,theyounger,mercer,andRobertCarswellofLymeRegis,mercer,all the said Chantry andc.
