The Wakely Family of Symondsbury, Dorset

First Generation
1. Robert WAKELY . Baptized 22/2/1761 in Symondsbury, Dorset, the son of Sarah WAKELY . The baptism register noted that Robert was “base-born” indicating that his mother was unmarried. Robert died March 1843 and was buried 27/3/1843 in Symondsbury, with his age given as 82 in the register. The register was also noted that Robert was the Parish Clerk for 40 years. On 24/7/1788, when William was age 27, he married Mary COX , daughter of Stephen and Alice COX , in Symondsbury. Mary (known as Molly) was baptized 12/3/1762 in Beaminster. It’s not known when she died. They had the following children, all baptized in Symondsbury: (1) Elizabeth , baptized 12/1/1791. (2) Robert , baptized 11/12/1792 and died 1871 in Bridport, age 78. There’s no evidence that Robert married. (3) Sarah , baptized 19/3/1795 and died 1/12/1859 in Symondsbury, age 63. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “The Will of Sarah Wakely late of Symondsbury in the County of Dorset Spinster deceased who died 1 December 1859 at Symondsbury aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by oaths of Robert Wakely of Symondsbury aforesaid Butcher and Thomas Wakely of the same place Yeoman the brothers and the Executors. Effects under £1,500.” (Worth around £177,000 today.) (4) William [ 2 ] . (5) Elizabeth , baptized 17/3/1799. (6) Thomas , baptized 1/3/1801. (7) Mary , baptized 10/7/1801. (8) Daniel Cox [3] .
2. William WAKELY [ Parents ]. Baptized 18/7/1797 in Symondsbury, William  died in December 1834, age 37, and was buried 19/12/1834 also in Symondsbury. On 22/3/1822, when William was age 24, he married Charlotte HARRIS in Symondsbury. Charlotte was born around 1800 in Charlinch, Somerset, but the exact date is unknown. It’s not known when she died. They had the following children, all baptized in Symondsbury: (1) Elizabeth , baptized 30/6/1822. (2) Charlotte , born about 1829. (3) Sarah Ann , baptized 15/9/1833 in Bridport and died 1897 in Axminster, Devon, age 64. In 1862, when Sarah Ann was age about 28, she married Edwin CHAPPLE , son of Thomas CHAPPLE and Lucretia Hunt PITFIELD , in Axminster. 3. Daniel Cox WAKELY [ Parents ]. Baptized 3/2/1805 in Symondsbury, Daniel died December 1848, age 43, and was buried 10/12/1848 in Symondsbury. The burial register was noted that Daniel was the Parish Clerk for 5 years. On 17/4/1834, when Daniel  was age 29, he married Betty WAY , daughter of John WAY , in Symondsbury. Betty was baptized 17/3/1808 in Poorstock, Dorset and died 1873 in Bridport, age 65. They had the following children: (1) Robert [ 4 ] . (2) Jane , baptized 13/4/1838 in Symondsbury. It’s not known when she died. In 1862, when Jane was age 24, she married Alfred ANGEL in Symondsbury. (3) Elizabeth , baptized 29/3/1840 in Symondsbury. (4) Daniel Cox [ 5 ] . (5) Thomas , baptized 1/8/1845 in Symondsbury.
