JohnAlfredParrisisoneoftheactiveandsuccessfulbusinessmen,farmersandstockraisersofSandwich township,whosetimeandenergiesarenowdevotedtothecultivationandimprovementofatractoflandof 120acressituatedaboutamilefromSandwich.Theneatandthriftyappearanceoftheplaceindicateshis carefulsupervisionandpracticalmethods.Heisnumberedamongtheoldsettlersofthecounty,datinghis residence in Illinois from 1858 …[He]wasrearedtomanhoodinLaSalleandDeKalbcountiesandacommonschooleducationwasafforded him.Hestartedouttomakehisownwayinlifewhenonlythirteenyearsofage,workingbythemonthasa farmhandforasalaryof$10permonth.Hewasambitioustoengageinfarmingonhisaccountortocarry onbusinessthatwouldmoredirectlybenefithimselfandafterhehadattainedhismajorityhebegan cultivatinglandandalsooperatingathreshingmachine.Hecontinuedinthelatterbusinessfortwenty-one seasonsdoingthreshingforthreecountiesandalsooperatingacloverhuller.Priortohismarriagehe boughtasmalltractoflandonwhichheerectedadwellingandcultivatedandfencedtheplace,openingup afarmsothathehadahometowhichhebroughthisbride.MrParrisexerciseshisrightoffranchisein supportoftherepublicanpartybutthehonorsandemolumentsofofficehavehadnoattractionforhimas hehasalwayspreferredtogivehisundividedtimeandattentiontohisbusinessaffairs.Hislifehasbeen quietlypassedinthehonorablepursuitsofthefarmbutinhisbusinessinterestshehasbecamewidely knownandisgenerallyesteemedbyallwithwhomhecomesincontact.Hedeservesmuchcreditforwhat hehasaccomplishedforhestartedoutinlifeonhisaccountattheageofthirteenyearsandhassincebeen dependent in own labors - a self-made man whose example in many respects is worthy of emulation.
