Military service transcript for Thomas William Grover (1864-1945)
Between 11/8/1881 and 10/11/1881, Thomas William Grover left his work as a baker’s assistant and served briefly in the infantry divison the 97th (The Earl of Ulster’s) Regiment of Foot. His attestation record taken in Woolwich, London, provides the following information: Born: Abby [sic] Parish, Hertfordshire Religion: C of E Age: 19 years 1 month [He was in fact 16.] Height 5' 9¼'' Trade: Baker Non-effective: Discharged 10 Nov 1881 to Maidstone General observations: By purchase £10 0s. 0d. [The equivalent of around £1,150 today. This may mean that he was obliged to buy himself out of service.] Service: 92 days Source:  British Regimental Service Registers 1756-1900
