The Jones Family of Much Wenlock, Shropshire

10.Link to census John Henry JONES [Parents]. Born 15/9/1899 in Knossington, John Henry died December 1984 in Nottingham, age 85. Occupation: Bricklayer (1939).

In the quarter ending December 1925, when John Henry was age 26, he married Ellen Stella TRIGG in Oakham. Born 2/7/1902 in Sutton on the Hill, Derbyshire and baptized there 27/7/1902, Ellen Stella died January 1990 in Leicestershire, age 87.

They had the following children, all born Oakham:

(1) Jack, born and died 1926. (2) Stella, born and died December 1927. (3) Gordon Kenneth, born 28/7/1935 and died 1971 in Oakham, age 35. In 1958, when Gordon was age 22, he married Doris C. HAMMOND (1936-?) In Uppingham, Rutland.

11.Link to census Herbert Henry JONES [Parents]. BHerbert Henry Jones.jpegorn 26/9/1895 at 51 Meeson Road, West Ham,  Herbert Henry died 27/6/1942 at the City Hospital, St Albans, age 46. Cause of death certified as Peritonitis, perforated ulcer, intestinal obstruction. Herbert was buried in Hatfield Road cemetery, St Albans.  Occupation: Ironmonger’s assistant (1911); Commercial traveller (1922); Meter reader for electricity company (1942). Served in France 9/3/1915-19/3/1919 (Royal Engineers).

The birth certificate records Herbert Henry.  His marriage & death certificates, & cemetery record, show Henry Herbert. The reason for the switch is unknown, but one possibility exists. Herbert's aunt, Jane Elizabeth Jones married Henry Harris. His brother (so Jane's brother in law), born about 1868, was Herbert Harris. If, as is suspected, Herbert Jones was brought up by Jane and Henry after his parents’ died he may have been known as Henry to avoid confusion with Herbert Harris. In addition, Henry Harris had a nephew, Herbert Leslie Harris, born 1900. Maybe it was a case of one too many Herberts?

On 11/2/1922 when Herbert Henry was age 26, he married Doris Esther HARRIS, daughter of Frederick George HARRIS & Esther Rose BURRIDGE, at Holy Trinity Church, Penge. Born on 1/8/1892 in St Albans, Doris Esther died 7/1/1968 in Peacehaven, Sussex, age 75.

They had the following children:

(1) Betty Doris [13] (2). Peter Leslie [14].  And one who is still living.
