The Pitfield Family of Symondsbury, Dorset

1. Henry PITFIELD. All we know is that Henry married Elizabeth (maiden name & marriage date unknown). They had the following children:

(1) Joseph [2]. (2) Elizabeth, born 1666. (3) Hannah, born 1669. (4) Charles, born 1671. (5) John, born 1673. John married Joan BROWNE.
(6) Richard, dates unknown. Richard married Jane DOUCH in 1722.

2. Joseph PITFIELD [Parents]. Joseph’s baptism and death dates are unknown. In 1718, Joseph married Lucretia HUNT in Burton Bradstock, Dorset. Lucretia’s baptism date is unknown. She died in November 1776 and was buried 20/11/1776 in Burton Bradstock.


They had the following children:


(1) Elizabeth, born 1718. (2) Jacob [3]. (3) Mary, born 1723. (4) Joseph, born 1727. In 1768, when Joseph was about 41, he married Ann ROGERS. Joseph died 1783, age about 56. Ann died about 1786.

Third Generation

3. Jacob PITFIELD [Parents]. Born 1723 & died 14/10/1795, Jacob was buried 20/10/1795 in Symondsbury.

In 1752, when Jacob was about 29, he married Ann CHILCOTT in Chilcombe, Dorset. Ann died in 1762.

They had the following children:


(1) John, born 1754 in Symondsbury. (2) Elizabeth, born 1755. In 1784, when Elizabeth was about 29, she married Nicholas TROWBRIDGE in Symondsbury. (3) Jane, baptized 10/9/1756 in Symondsbury. (4) Anne, baptized 30/12/1757 in Symondsbury. In 1777, when Anne was about 20, she married Thomas COX. (5) Mary, baptized 7/2/1759 in Symondsbury. In 1786, when Mary was about 27, she married John GRUNDY. (6) Joseph [4]. (7) Jacob, born 1761 & died 1762.


In 1766, when Jacob was 43, he married Joan SPRAGUE. Joan died 1819.

They had the following children:


(1) Sarah, born 1767, baptized 9/9/1767 in Symondsbury. In 1803, when Sarah was 36, she married John BISHOP. Sarah died 1822. (2) Jacob [5]. (3) John, born 1770. John died 1838. (4) Jenny, born 1773. (5) Lucy, baptized 17/10/1776 in Symondsbury. In 1810, when Lucy was about 34, she married Charles GAMMES. (6) Thomas [6]. (7) Catherine, born about 1779. (8) Jenny, born about 1780. In 1803, when Jenny was about 23, she married John WARR. Jenny died 1840.

Fourth Generation

4. Joseph PITFIELD [Parents]. Born 1760 & died 1848, age about 88.

On 2/4/1782, when Joseph was about 22, he married Mary SLADE. It is not known when Mary was born or died.

They had the following children:


(1) Ann Chilcott, baptized 23/6/1783 in Frampton, Devon. (2) Mary, baptized 1/9/1784 in Frampton. On 7/12/1804, when Mary was about 20, she married Alexander THOMPSON. (3) Lydia Watts, born 1785 & died 1866, age about 81. (4) Lucretia Hunt, born 1787 in Muckleford & died 1863 in Axminster. In 1809 when Lucretia was 32, she married Thomas CHAPPLE, son of Richard CHAPPLE & Sarah BRYANT, in Symondsbury. (5) Joseph Edward Chilcott, born 1788. In 1827, when Joseph was about 39, he married Amelia STONE (1789-1848). (6)William Slade, born 1790. (7) John, born 1792. (8) Augusta, baptized 9/11/1801 in Toller Pocorum, Dorset.


5. Jacob PITFIELD [Parents]. Born 1769 in Symondsbury & died there in 1799, age about 30.

In 1790, when Jacob was about 21, he married Elizabeth HORNER in Cerne Abbas, Dorset. Elizabeth died 1799; it’s not known when she was born.

They had the following children:


(1) Elizabeth Horner, baptized 28/5/1792 in Chideock & died September 1840 in Holborn, Middlesex, age 48. On 12/10/1816, when Elizabeth was age 24, she married Edward Hallows PLUMPTRE (1786-1851), an Attorney at Law, son of Charles PLUMPTRE & Mary MELLAR. (2) Sarah, baptized 6/12/1794 in Symondsbury & died there February 1795, age 2 months.  (3) Lucretia, baptized 28/12/1794 in Symondsbury. It’s not known when she died. (4) Jacob, baptized 19/6/1796 in Symondsbury. It’s not known when he died. (5) Mary Ann, baptized 21/9/1797 in Symondsbury & died there in January 1798, age about 4 months.

6. Thomas PITFIELD [Parents]. Born 1778 & died 1858, age about 80.

In 1799, when Thomas was about 21, he married Ann (maiden name unknown). Ann was born 1778 and died 1822, age about 44.

They had the following children:


(1) John, born 1800. In 1832, when John was about 32, he married Jane ROPER. (2) Ann, born 1802, Ann died 1825, age about 23. (3) Elizabeth, born 1803. (4) Mary, born 1806 & died 1860, age about 54. (5) Jane, born about 1807, Jane died 1878, age about 71. (6) Catherine, born 1809 & died 1862, age about 53.  (7) Fanny, born about 1814. (8) Susan, born about 1816.
