The Chapple Family of Devon

35. Thomas CHAPPLE [Parents].  Born 1791. It’s not known when Thomas died.


On 24/10/1814, when Thomas was 23, he married Elizabeth FACEY in Colyton. It’s not known when Elizabeth was born or died.


They had the following children:


(1) Sarah, baptized 9/7/1815 in Shute. (2) Elizabeth, born 1817.


36. Henry CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born about 1773 in Colyton, Henry died there in October 1848 in Colyton, age 75, and was buried there 29/10/1848.


On 30/12/1806 when Henry was 33, he married Mary FOWLER (although the marriage entry in the parish register gives her name as Maria Vowler) in Colyton. Born 20/1/1774 in Colyton and baptized there 6/2/1774, Mary died in September 1845, also in Colyton, age 71. She was buried there 28/9/1845.


They had the following children:


(1) Harriet, born 3/4/1807 & baptized 17/5/1807 in Colyton. On 12/5/1828, when Harriet was age 21, she married John DROWER. (2) William [46]. (3) Henry [47]. (4) Eliza, baptized 3/7/1815 in Colyton and died there in 1852, age about 37. On 20/12/1840, when Eliza was age 25, she married Charles NEWTON in Colyton.


37. William CHAPPLE [Parents]. Baptized 19/8/1764 in Colyton, William died 15/1/1846 in Axminster, age about 81.


On 21/11/1789, when William was age about 25, he married Jenny STOFFORD in Colyton. There is no evidence they had any children.


On 17/11/1790, when William was age about 26, he married Honor STONE in Colyton. Born about 1757, Honor died 19/7/1849 in Axminster.


They had the following children, all born/baptized in Colyton:


(1) Esther, born 17/12/1792 & baptized 30/12/1792. (2) William, born 15/8/1795 & baptized 29/11/1795. (3) Samuel [48]. (4) Henry, born 9/6/1803 & baptized 26/6/1803.


38. Richard CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born 7/10/1780 in Colyton & baptized there 7/1/1787. It is not known when he died.


On  12/3/1804, when Richard was 23, he married Ann ASH in Branscombe. It’s not known when Ann was born or died.


They had the following children, all events in Colyton:


(1) John, born 20/4/1804 & baptized 3/11/1805. John died 1886, age 81. (2) Mary, born 3/3/1806 & baptized 23/3/1806. Mary died 1/10/1816, age 10, and was buried 6/10/1816. (3) Elizabeth, born 24/1/1809 & baptized 12/2/1809. (4) Richard, baptized 28/3/1813. (5) Emma, baptized  5/6/1815. Emma died September 1901, age 86, and  was buried 18/9/1901.


39. James CHAPPLE [Parents]. Baptized 19/5/1765 in Axminster, it’s not known when he died. Occupation: Cordwainer. A 1788 bastardy order against James reads: “Joan Gough. James Chapple the younger of Axminster father of her female bastard born June to pay £1 15s and 1s 6d a week.”


In 1793, when James was age about 28, he married Mary HARDING. Born about 1768, Mary died in 1816, age 48.

They had the following children:


(1) Molly, baptized 17/8/1794 in Musbury.(2) James [49]. (3) John, baptized 16/6/1799 in Musbury & died 1871, age 72. Occupation: Cordwainer. (4) Absalom, born 1802 in Shute and died there in September 1819, age about 17. Absalom was buried 1/10/1819, also in Shute.


40. William CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born 1775 in Axminster, William died there in 1856, age about 81.


On 6/5/1794, when William was age about 18, he married Mary COLE, in Axminster. Born about 1775 in Axminster, Mary died there 1854, age 79.


They had the following children:


(1) William [50]. (2) James Cole [51]. (3) Robert [52]. (4) Richard, born 1801 in Axminster & died there 1852, age 51. (5) Mary Ann, born 1801 in Axminster. (6) John, born 1804 in Axminster & died 1807, age 3. (7) Thomas, born 1807 in Axminster & died in 1850, age 43.

41. Thomas CHAPPLE [Parents]. Baptized 4/1/1778 in Axminster, Thomas died there in 1850, age 73. Occupation: Grocer & Banker.


In 1809, when Thomas was 32, he married Lucretia Hunt PITFIELD, daughter of Joseph PITFIELD & Mary SLADE, in Symondsbury, Dorset. Born in 1787 in Muckleford, Dorset, Lucretia died 1863 in Axminster, age about 76.


They had the following children, all born or baptized in Axminster:


(1) Lydia, baptized 31/1/1812. On 30/10/1831 when Lydia was 21, she married Summerland STANIFORD, son of John STANIFORD & Elizabeth KIRSOP, in Axminster. (2) Eliza Ann, baptized 31/1/1812 in Axminster. It’s not known when Eliza Ann died. On 4/5/1834, when  was age about 22, she married Thomas SHEPHERD in Axminster. (3) Sarah, born about 1816. (4) Thomas, born about 1817. Thomas never married & died 1864, age 47. (5) Joseph Pitfield, born 1818. Joseph died 1841 in Axminster, age 23. (6) Lucretia, born about 1821. On 4/6/1846, when Lucretia was 25, she married Alfred GARDINER, in Axminster. (7) Edwin [53]. (8) William, born about 1823. On 9/11/1847, when William was 24, he married Susan Mary KELLING, in Axminster. (9) Augusta Mary, born about 1826. On 16/8/1849 when Augusta Mary was 23, she married Edwin George HOOKE, in Axminster. (10) Charlotte Amelia, born about 1831. On 1/6/1854, when Charlotte Amelia was 23, she married Thomas Haydon WILLS, in Axminster. (11) Jane, baptized 23/6/1813. It’s not known when Jane died.
