The Homewood Family of Hadlow, Kent

1.Link to census William HOMEWOOD. Born about 1779 in Crowborough, Sussex, William died quarter ending March 1865 in Hadlow, age about 86. Occupation: Labourer.

On 25/5/1801, when William was age about 22, he married Philadelphia GATES in Rotherfield, Sussex. Philadelphia was born about 1782 in Rothfield & died 23/4/1854 in Malling, age about 71.


They had the following children:


(1) Trayton, baptized 25/1/1801 in Rotherfield & died February 1854 in East Peckham. This unusual name comes from an English expression that means “a settlement near trees”. (2) Moses, baptized 13/3/1803 in Rotherfield. (3) Obed, baptized 19/5/1805 in Rotherfield. (4) Isaac, born about 1808. (5) Harriett, born about 1812 in East Peckham. (6) William [2]. (7) Jane, baptized 7/1/1821 in East Peckham. On 11/10/1851, when Jane was age 30, she married Thomas HUMPHREY in Hadlow. (8) Stephen [3]. (9) Ambrose, born between 1822 & 1826.

2.Link to census William HOMEWOOD [Parents]. Born about 1813 in East Peckham, William died quarter ending June 1875 in Malling, age 63. Occupation: Ag. Labourer.

Around 1832, when William was age about 19, he married Eleanor VENESS. Eleanor was born about 1811 in Hadlow & died before 6/4/1861; she does not appear in the census of that date.

They had the following children:


(1) Harriett, baptized 20/10/1833 in Hadlow & died 1910 age about 77. (2) Alfred, baptized 12/7/1835 in Hadlow. (3) Maria [4]. (4) Charity, baptized 3/11/1839 in Hadlow. (5) Stephen [5]. (6) Ambrose [6]. (7) William, baptized 14/12/1845 in East Peckham. (8) Frederick [7].


3.Link to census Stephen HOMEWOOD [Parents]. Baptized 27/5/1821 in East Peckham, Stephen died quarter ending June 1862 in Snodland, age about 41. Occupation: Labourer.


Stephen married Ann, date unknown, but likely to be about 1842 when he was age 21. Ann died before 7/4/1861; she does not appear in that census & Stephen was described in it as a widower.

They had the following children:


(1) John Richard, born quarter ending June 1843 in East Peckham. (2) Henry Hayes, born quarter ending June 1847 in Hadlow & died there quarter ending June 1858, age 11.
